Saturday 4-15-23 Camping at Mammoth Cave & More Hiking

Camping at Mammoth Cave National Park

We had another outstanding day.

We had a lot sunshine. Larry put the solar panels out. The panels generated power and Larry charged everything.

I crawled out of bed around 7:00 and made pancakes for breakfast. Afterwards we got ready for another hike. We hiked to where we left off yesterday. The hike started on the Historic Entrance trail at the visitor center, when it Yd off to go to River Styx Spring and Dixon Cave Trail we took the River Styx Spring trail. We stopped at a sign by the Green River that talked about the riverboats that traveled down the Green River many years ago. It's hard to belief because there's hardly any water in the river. From here we picked up the River Bluff Trail which took us up the side of the mountain, through the woods and on a ledge that looked over the Green River. As we walked to the overview we walked along side a split rail fence. It was put in to protect people from falling down the mountainside. We stopped at the Overlook and saw a beautiful view of the Green River. After visiting the overview we hiked to where the trail Yd off. If you went to the right you can see the cave and if you go to the left it takes you to the picnic area. We decided to go left because it was a longer. It was very nice with a lot of trees. As we hiked we rested now and then. We sat on benches or rocks. When we got to the visitor center Larry took a picture of me in front of the park sign. Then we went back to the Minnie. We didn't see the turkey but we heard it. It was a gorgeous spring day with the birds chirping and the butterflies flying by. We had a super hike.

Hiking trails and mileage

We spent the rest of the day relaxing and reading. Larry spent most of the day outside reading. I took a two hour nap. I played some Sudoku games.

For dinner we barbecued sausage links. After dinner I walked around for 45 minutes. By the end of the day I did 27,000 steps, which put me in 5th place in my group.
