Thursday 4--13-23 National Corvette Museum & Mammoth Cave National Park

National Corvette Museum

After staying overnight in Walmart parking lot we moved on. Our next destination was Mammoth Cave National Park. It was about 45 miles away from Bowling Green.

Before leaving Walmart Larry wanted to check on one of the tires that was showing it was a few pounds low on air. He removed the sensor from the tire and replaced it, it then reported the pressure to be OK. A little while later the alarm went off showing it to be low, he checked it again and found that when he removed the sensor a small seal had fallen out allowing air to escape. He found and reinserted the seal but now he needed to add air to the tire. He found a Discount Tire store and it was only 2 miles away. After putting everything down off we went to Discount Tires.

While they were airing up the tires I walked next door to buy breakfast at Krispy Kreme Donuts. We hadn't had a Krispy Kreme donut in a few years. The last time was in the Rio Grande Valley when we went down there to square dance. They were a little spendy but they were good. For a half dozen it was $11.00. We had great service at both Discount Tires and Krispy Kreme Donuts.

Next stop was the Corvette Plant in Bowling Green to go on a tour. We walked to the entrance to sign up for one and they said it would cost $50.00 each for the plant tour and a ticket to the National Corvette Museum. According to the website the plant tour was only $7 and you could purchase it separately, the lady said they had stopped that and you had to buy a package that included everything. We decide to pass on the tour of the plant and just go to the museum, which was just across the street. The cost for the museum was $16.00.

We had been to the National Corvette Museum years ago and liked it. We walked around the museum for about an hour and a half. We were surprised at the number of people there considering it was a Thursday. The museum has over 80 Corvettes on display from the 1953 era to present. The displays change periodically. The cars are beautifully preserved and some are one-of-a-kind concept vehicles. They had displays on how they build the Corvette. They had displays on how they retrieved and restored some of the eight Corvettes that were damaged when a sinkhole opened up inside the museum back in 2014. They also had a video on how they fixed the sinkhole. They had a special exhibit about Carl Casper, he designed and built cars for car shows and movies. We had a great time looking and learning about the Corvettes.

After touring the museum we went on to Mammoth Cave National Park. We arrived there at 11:30, there was nobody in the check-in booth and check in isn't until 1:00. Our site was available so we parked the Minnie. We had lunch and then walked over to the visitor center and got some information about the park. It was busy.

When we got back we tried to check in but no one was at the booth. We went back to our site and set up our chairs outside. We relaxed in our chairs with a book. A little later we went back to the booth and told the young lady we wanted to check in. She asked our site number and told us she would check us in.

For dinner we had bacon sandwiches. The sites have no power but you can run your generator from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. I cooked the bacon in the microwave. After dinner I walked around for about an hour. I walked the four loops. I had a great walk. I ended up doing 27,000 steps.

We had a super day.
