Happy October
Happy October.
We started the day out by getting ready to move on down the road. After everything was securely in place we were on the road by 8:00.
As we were leaving the campground had thick fog but once out of the campground the fog lifted. Larry drove 166 miles. We started on Redwood Highway, a four lane highway. The highway took us by the coast. We saw a few herds of elk. While we were hiking yesterday we saw a herd at a RV park and this morning it was still there and there was another one in the RV park next door. One of the herds were in the road so we had to stop until they got out of the road. They wouldn't move so a car came around everyone and moved a couple of them out of the road so he could go through. The person in front of us honked their horn and a huge bull came out and the herd moved out of the road. Part of the herd was on the other side of the road on a hill grazing. I saw a couple of the elk with collars, I think maybe their being tracked. We continued on down the highway. The forest was on one side of us and the other side had the ocean. We stopped at a couple of view points to look at the ocean. It was pretty. We got on California Highway 299, which was a two lane highway. As we drove we saw a few more herds of elk sharing a ranchers field with his horses, cows and sheep. While driving down highway 299 the Trinity River ran by it. It was beautiful because at places it looked like it wasn't flowing that fast but other places there were big rapids. The road was a curvy mountain road.

When it was time for lunch we pulled on the side of ride by the Trinity River. Traffic was starting to pick up and Larry had to pull over a lot to let people around. It was time to rest and have lunch. After lunch we continued onward. We saw other picnic areas we could have stopped at for lunch not too far away from where we did. The drive was pretty.

We arrived Whiskeytown National Recreational Area about 1:00. We decided to stay at the Whiskeytown Marinas Campground because it was closer to the highway. The campground for RVs was a parking lot and each site had a picnic table. To register you had to stop at the office. We had no problem finding a site. There are spickets for water, the restrooms had running water and there were pay showers by the beach area. They had a dump station but you have to get the key from the store to use it. There is no power but there is internet. They have a very nice boat ramp and a sailboat marina. Personnel watercraft (jet skis) aren't allowed on the lake. There is a nice beach and swimming area, in its own cove. They have covered picnic tables at the beach.

While there we walked around the campground because there's no hiking. I ended up doing 10,000 steps, which put me in 7th for the week with 81,664 steps.
