Guess what this is? |
Saturday December 31, 2016
The rain came in early this morning and it drizzled all day. There was no square dancing, for some reason nobody square danced on New Year's Eve. However, there were lots of New Years eve parties and dances including one right here in the J5 RV park, they even had a live band but we did not attend. To begin the day we went to the RV Park Saturday morning get together for coffee and doughnuts and got updated on what is happening in the park. During the get together they draw names and give out prices. I put my name in at the last minute and the first name that was drawn was mine. The picture above is what I won. Do you know what it is? Well it's a glass boot with peanuts and a $5 coupon for the Texas Roadhouse. What a surprise. We had a great time visiting with the people who are staying in the park, everyone is so friendly and nice, one of the ladies even goes around and gives everyone a back rub. After the meeting we decided to check out the McAllen Public Library and the International Museum of Art and Science.

The first stop was at the McAllen Public Library. It is the largest single story library in the country. It started out as a Walmart and the city converted it into a library. They did a fabulous job on the conversion and you can't tell that it once was a Walmart. The building, furniture and lighting are all very modern looking. The shelves for the books are shorter than most libraries giving it a very open feeling. They have information desks throughout the library along with study rooms and computer rooms all around. It was very nice and well lit. A very beautiful facility.
Every Saturday they have a Farmers Market in front of the library so as
we were leaving we walked through. It didn't take long
considering it was very small. We stopped by a booth that was selling miniature fresh baked pies called Pies By Petit, the pies were $5 and they had Rajas, Picadillo,
Mexican Tuna, Ham and Cheese, Pineapple Cheesecake and Apple. We bought
an apple pie to eat after dinner for dessert, unfortunately we didn't think it was very good.

One of the exhibits in the Radical Element Sewing Gallery |
The next stop was the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS). It is a small museum and wasn't that impressive. They had a couple of art galleries, one was art that was donated by Mansfield (American 1948 to 2001) and the other one was the Clark Gallery. In the Clark Gallery they had art exhibits on different elements called Radical Elements Sewing. They had a special exhibit called X-treme Bugs, which cost an additional $7.00 so we passed on it. There was an exhibit on the history of the Rio Grande Valley. Another exhibit was about Sacred Vision. Outside they had a nice play area made of wood where children can learn about how things work. It didn't take long to go through the museum.
On the way home we stopped at The Home Depot to see if we could find a basket for our phone, tablet, camera and other little things. We walked through the store but didn't find anything. Then we walked next door to HEB to pickup a loaf of bread. As we were headed home we saw a Office Depot so we walked through looking for a basket. We found one that should work perfectly. The next stop was lunch at Taco Bell. After lunch we continued towards the RV. We swung into Target to see if we could get some Command hooks to hold the basket on the wall. We didn't find anything that we thought would be able to hold the weight of the basket and our stuff. We decided we would simply use screws to attach it to the wall.

When we got home we said hi to Flo. Then I took her for a walk and Larry hung the basket. The rest of the day we stayed at the house.
