Having fun square dancing

We had a fabulous day of square dancing. In the morning and afternoon there were workshops. The morning session was at 10:30 but we showed up a half hour early to watch the A workshop. As we watched the dancers we realized we could do most of the moves that were called. We saw that many of the dancer were struggling, we figured this was caused by lack of experience and opportunity to dance A in the area. They had four squares of A dancers. The Plus workshop had 15 squares. We had a marvelous time dancing to all the callers. The workshop was an hour and a half and the dancers were very good. The afternoon session was at 3:00 to 4:00, this was a High Energy and DBD Dance with the callers alternating tips. There were 13 squares, which was great considering they had a Plus workshop at the same time. The dance was a lot of fun and challenging.

In the evening we attended the Caller Rama, it took place an hour before the regular dance. They had callers from last night and a couple new ones. During the Caller Rama there were six squares and round dancing was going on next door. We danced a couple of the tips. During the actual dance there were over 25 squares and a lot of round dancers. Plus dancing was going on in one hall and they had A dances in the other. The A dancers asked Mike if they could call some A and he said sure. The first tip Mike was calling they didn’t have enough people to have a square so they asked Larry and me to make up the square. We told them we only knew A1 so Mike said there was no problem just calling A1 moves, we did very well. As we were dancing the tip more A dancers showed up and they ended up having three squares. After the first tip the dance became an A2 dance so we didn’t dance. In the plus room they had announcements, did drawings, a dance exhibition and they had a very nice presentation for Marshall Flippo. They gave him a Texas flag, a U.S. flag and plaque to show their appreciation for  64 years of dedication to square dancing. We had a great evening of dancing. We stayed for the after party. During the after party Hunter sang a few songs while the rest of the callers got ready to do a few skits. The skits were very entertaining. For refreshments there were cookies and lemonade. They had a super video about Marshall Flippo. He is retiring from traveling, his last dance on the road is in Abilene on Monday, he will still be calling in Tucson. We had a outstanding weekend of square dancing.
