Monday 4-18 Buffalo Point Campground & Hiking

Beautiful spring day

We have moved campgrounds and we have just a bit of a cell signal on our AT&T hotspot, hopefully I will be able to update my blog. The connection is very poor but for the moment we can access email and the weather which is the most important.

We had a beautiful spring day. It started out with clouds and the temperature in the low 40s. By 10:00 the clouds went away and the sun came out. It stayed in the 60s.

We started out the day by getting the Minnie ready to go. We're not leaving Buffalo National River, we're just moving down the road 35 miles to Buffalo Point Campground. We left around 9:30. The road we took went through a couple of small towns. The last 10 miles was a curving mountain road.

We arrived at Buffalo Point around 10:15. There were five small loops A-E. Some were first come first serve, others were reservation only and there is a walk-in loop. We're in A Loop, which is first come first serve. There are 22 sites and RVs can't be over 23-26 feet because the sites aren't that deep. We got site #21, Larry had to use some blocks to level the front passenger side. The loop we're in is gorgeous and our site looks over the Buffalo River. There is a launch area where people can launch rafts, Kayaks and canoes. We're so happy that our hot spot is working, being able to check the weather report is so important for us.

Camping at Buffalo Point

Once the Minnie was setup we had lunch. Then we went on a 8.3 mile hike. We hiked all the trails in the campground. We started from B Loop and took the Campground trail (1.4 miles) to the parking lot by the cabins. The campground trail took us gradually up the hill and through the forest. We walked by a few of the cabins, they were built by the CCC. At the parking lot we rested at a picnic table. We decided to continue on by hiking the Indian Rockhouse trail, it was 3.5 miles round trip. This trail ended up being one of the best trails we have hiked in a long time. It took us up and down the hillside, along a beautiful creek and through the forest. The forest had some pine trees and we hadn't seen any in awhile. We had to hike around boulders and there were some loose rocks but the trails were great. While we hiked there were signs on different points of interest: Sinkhole Icebox, Waterfall, Old Zinc Mine, Natural Bathtub, Pebbles Springs, CCC Rock Quarry, Sculpted Bedrock and the Indian Rockhouse. The scenery was outstanding. The sun was shining so we saw a lot of butterflies and wildflowers. It was very peaceful hiking along the mountain creek. When we got to the Indian Rockhouse we were very surprised on how big it was. It was a huge cave in the rocks and had a creek running through it. We walked around inside the structure, it was amazing. We rested on a rock before starting our return. The trail back to the parking lot was mainly up the hill but not too steep. From the parking lot we took the Overlook Trail back and stopped at the Overlook. It was a pretty view of the Buffalo River. We hiked on rock slabs and some of it was wet so we had to be careful because the slabs were slippery. When we got back to where the trail Y'd off we took the Forest trail (1 mile) back to the Minnie. By the end we were tired but we had a super hike.

We spent the evening reading. By the end of the day I did 27,000 steps, which put me in 3rd place in my group.

We had a super day.
