Camping at Datil Well Campground
The second place we camped at was Datil Well BLM Campground. The road to the campground is a .25 mile gravel road but it wasn’t bad to drive. Datil Well is a beautiful campground with a Nature Trail. The trail has a loop that is 3 miles long and two partial loops that are 2 miles long each. We hiked the 3 mile loop, it was very well maintain and easy to hike. The hike was out in the open and went up a hill to 7000 feet. We stopped at a few places of interest, San Augustin Lookout, Rocky Point and Crosby Canyon Overview. The scenery was pretty with Pena pines, junipers and other desert plants. We saw a cottontail during the hike.

On the way to El Caso Campground we stopped at a small beautiful church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church. El Caso Campground is in the Apache National Forest down a 2 mile gravel road. The camping area had dirt roads and needed a little tender loving care. There was a hiking trail at the campground, we hiked about a mile of it. The trail was on a service road and wasn’t maintained. The hike was easy and the scenery was very nice. We saw the lake from the trail but the drought has been rough on it so there wasn’t much left. As we hiked we tried to find the original trail but couldn’t. We camped at El Caso for a night and enjoyed watching a family play baseball with a bat and tennis ball.
