Friday 12-19-25 Camping, Hiking & Barbecuing

Buescher State Park Headquarters

We had a gorgeous day camping at Buescher State Park. The morning temperature was 42 degrees and the high was 67 degrees. We had blue skies and sunshine.

Gorgeous Day

We started the day off by have mini waffles for breakfast. After breakfast we went on a 5 mile hike for 2.5 hours. We started at Cozy Circle and hiked the road until we got to Virginia Harris Cockrell Cancer Research Center, which was 1 mile. We took the road because we were afraid the trail was going to be muddy because of all the rain we had a couple of days ago. At the entrance we picked up the trail. We hiked it for 1 mile to a parking lot and rested at a table. After our rest we got back on the trail, we hiked it to the Roosevelt's Cutoff. We hiked the cutoff, which was a half mile and got back on the trail. We took the trail back to the research center entrance. We stopped at a wall and rested before finishing the hike. During the hike the trail weaved through beautiful oaks and pine. We hiked under a canopy of trees. The trail had rocks, roots and pine needles (they felt great under your boots). We hiked down a ravine and up the other side, not very deep. At places we hiked up hills and got our hearts beating fast. But overall the trail was easy to moderate. While we rested at the parking lot a bicyclist came by, he had already done 15 miles. He said he bikes 20 miles a day so he has a little more to do. He had been biking since 7:30, so it was about two hours. A car showed up with four young people and we said hi to them. By the end of the hike we were tired. We started at 8:15 and finished at 10:45. We had a great hike.

After resting from our hike I made sandwiches for lunch.

I spent part of the afternoon playing games. I played the Daily Challenges of Solitaire and Mahjong. The event was Event: Hard Road Mini of 10 games. It took me 1 hour, 16 minutes and 2 seconds to complete, which put me in 12th place in my group. I played Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds 2.

I finished reading Knave of Diamonds by Laurie R. King . It was the 19th book of Russell & Holmes. It was a good detective book. While I played games Larry read. He started a book yesterday and finished it today. When he finished he recommended it to me so I started to read it. The book is Rules of '48 by Jack Cady. It was his last novel.

For dinner Larry barbecued hamburger patties. This is the first time we barbecued this trip and they came got delicious.

After dinner I did a 1.5 walked for 40 minutes. I walked the same route as last night except I only did it once. As I walked I stopped at the point of interest #2, Big Tree Retreat. It was were the state's former champion cedar elm stands. It's treasured for it's magnificent size. When I got to the CCC Refectory I walked around the parking lot then I took the CCC Crossover, which is the point of interest #1. It is a short trail that takes you from Cozy Circle to the CCC Refectory. The area was built by the CCC, your can see the rockwork and you walk on a bridge the CCC built. It weaves through the trees back to Cozy Circle at the bathroom. I had a very nice walk.
