Thursday 8-31 Horse Racing

Square Dancing

We started the day out by attending a square dance workshop. During the workshop we went through Relay-the-Deucey in different positions and reviewed other moves that were covered in the workshops all week. There were five squares and it was for an hour and a half. After the workshop Larry and I went back to the Minnie and read until lunchtime.

While we were at lunch they had the paddle boat preliminary races. It started to rain and then the hail came. The people who were racing got soaked but they finished the races. After lunch I was suppose to meet up with Betty and our opponent to play a game of Polish horseshoes. One of the ladies wasn't feeling well so we rescheduled the game until tomorrow at 8:00 in the morning. After rescheduling Betty and I practiced until it started to rain. Larry had brought the umbrella so all three of us walked back together. When we got to the square dancing hall I waited there until Larry returned after taking Betty to her trailer.

At 3:00 we did a little horse racing. This year the races were in the square dancing hall, which worked out great since we didn't have to walk very far. There were five races and I was a jockey in each race. I won three of the five races. The first race I was James's jockey and won so Dan asked me to be his jockey. I told him yes and I ended up being his jockey the rest of the races. The races are very cute. They have six wooden horses for people to buy for $3.00. Then the owner ask someone to be their jockey and the owners name the horses. People bet on the horse for $2.00. The horse that wins the owner gets the money that's in the owners pot, which is $18.00. The people that bet get paid back according to the odds. For example if you bet $2.00 on the same horse and the odds were 3-1 you win $6.00. The track is marked on the floor with tape and Brad rolls three dice and whatever number shows up on each dice that horse moves up. If the three dice are all 4's the number 4 horse will moved up three spaces. If each dice had a different number then three different horses move up. I ended up making $22.00 plus $11.00 in tips from the owners. We had a super time at the horse races.

In the evening we attended the dance. Tonight's didn't have a theme. We had seven squares. The after party was a get together and they served nachos. The dancers brought other snacks they wanted and their own drinks. We left after the dance considering we were tired. We had a great day.
