Sunday 4-8 Camping at Old Stone Fort State Park

It's Sunday relax and enjoy

It was 27 degrees when we woke up and overcast. The clouds stayed in all day and the sun tried to come out but the temperature never got out of the 40's..

After lunch we went down to the museum to pay for another night of camping. While there we watched a movie about the park and its history. It was very interesting. The Old Fort was built in the Middle Woodland Period 1,500 to 2,000 years ago and used by the Native Indians for over 500 years. After they abandoned the site European settlers discovered it, they thought the walls had been built as a fort. In 1969 the state of Tennessee bought 400 acres of Chumley estate that is now known as the Old Fort State Archaeology Park. After studying the area archeologist decided what they found wasn't a fort at all, it was a place the Native Indians used for a ceremonial gathering place.

The park has a picnic area with a playground, grills and picnic tables, an old wooden bridge to get into the camping area, a museum and hiking trails.

We spent most of the day relaxing under the heater and reading. After dinner we walked around for an hour. We walked to the picnic area and to the museum. The picnic area has a lot of tables and grills and looks over the Duck River. The Old Stone Fort State Park is a pretty park.
