Friday 10-5 Gilmore Car Museum

Super day!!!!

We spent the day at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. It was an outstanding museum with over 400 cars in seven different buildings on 90 acres. Donald Gilmore started collecting cars at his house across the street from the museum and ran out of room so he started the museum in 1966.

We started our tour in the Heritage Center by watching a five minute movie about the museum. After the movie we walked through the Gallery, which had a display about The Era of the Muscle Car, 1930's automobiles and 1950's/60's favorites. The other museums we walked through were Franklin Collection, Model A Ford, Cadillac-LaSalle Club, Lincoln Motorcar Heritage, Pierce-Arrow and Classic Car Club of America. Besides the museums there was a diner, where we had lunch. It was an authentic diner from the 1940's. There was an old Shell Station and Pedal Car Barn, where there was a movie set from the Gnome-Mobile movie made by Disney in 1967. There was a nice motorcycle gallery. There was a building that displayed some of the hood ornaments that cars use to have. On the grounds there was the Midwest Miniatures Museum, which is independent from the Gilmore Car Museum. It had beautiful miniatures. We walked around the Gilmore Car Museum for over four hours. The displays and buildings were outstanding. A couple of the buildings had automobiles on two floors, they had a huge ramp to get the cars up to the second floor. Most of the automobiles are on loan from different people. Whats nice about this car museum is you can get close to all the cars and walk completely around them, they are not roped off. We had a super time.

After our tour we went to Fort Custer State Recreation Area. It had been raining on and off all day and it's suppose to be even worse the next couple of days so we decided to stay put at Fort Custer. Larry checked in and was assigned a site right next to the bathroom and showers. After setting up the Minnie we relaxed. After dinner we walked around the campground for 45 minutes. Then I finished getting my steps for the day. We had a great day.
