Saturday 4-1 Visiting Helena-West Helena

We have been on the road for a week and are having a blast. We left Pendleton Campground this morning and went to Helena-West Helena. There use to be two cities (Helena and West Helena) but they were both struggling to stay alive so they joined to form one city but kept both names.

We spent the day in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas visiting a few of their museum. The first museum was The Delta Culture Museum which is about the history of The Blues. It had two sections, one section was on when and who started the blues and the other section was on the musicians and singers that started the blues on the Arkansas Delta. One famous blues program is King Biscuit Time, it is broadcast live from Helena, Monday through Friday on KFFA 1360. It is the longest running daily American radio broadcast in history. It has been on the air since 1941.

The second museum was across the street at The Depot which is an old train depot. The museum had two floors, the first floor had displays that told the history of Helena and the second floor was displays on the Civil War. While walking around we learned a lot about Helena, the displays were very well done. There was a interactive display where I challenged Larry to a boat race, he won but it was fun.

The third museum was a few blocks away called Helena Museum of Phillips County. This was another museum on the history of Helena. It had two floors the first floor had displays about Helena and the second floor had displays on the different wars. One display they had was a house in the 1800s, that showed how they lived.

The last site we visited was Pillow Thompson House. The gentleman (Raymond) that gave us the tour was very good. He talked about the house and how it was donated to the university. The university fixed it up and made into a Culinary Arts and Hospitality program but it didn’t work out so now they rent out the space for parties. He had to learn about the history of the house and Helena on his own. He did a super job. We had a great time walking around Helena and learning about its history.

After touring the Pillow Thompson House we decided to find a place to stay for the night. We decided we were going to stay at a casino in Tunica County, Mississippi. Larry knew there use to be a riverboat that you could take to ride down the Mississippi River. It was in the same area as the casinos so we stopped to see if it was still in business. We got to where it had been but it is gone, the dock is still there. Tunica County has built a beautiful area where you can walk around and look at the Mississippi, River. In the area there is a cool looking building which is where the Tunica Museum is located. We walked inside to get some information about the museum. The museum was going to close in a half hour and it wasn’t open on Sundays or Mondays so we didn’t go. As we were inside Larry asked the lady about the boat and she said that the owner of the boat decided to move it out for some reason. Now the area sits empty. As she was talking to us she said that another river boat was going down the Mississippi River right now. We thanked her and we headed towards the door to see it. After walking through the gift shop we headed towards the casinos.

The casinos are located right down the street so we didn’t have to go far. We drove down the casino strip to look for a place to stay for the night. We decided to stay in the parking lot of Tunica Roadhouse Casino considering they have ample RV parking and there are three casinos right there. After having dinner and taking Flo for a walk Larry and I went over and checked out the casinos. The three casinos are: Tunica Roadhouse, Horseshoe and Gold Strike. We decided that Horseshoe looked the best for me to play in. Larry said good-bye and went back to the Minnie while I gambled for a couple of hours. When I left the Horseshoe I had won $1.50, that’s pretty good considering I started out just putting $5.00 in and I left with $6.50, percentage wise that’s great. After relaxing for a little bit I decided to gamble a little more. This time I went to the Tunica Roadhouse Casino. I was there another two hours and lost $4.00 before I decided to call it a night. We had a fun day.
